Project: Camp Fire Cabins at Camp K Client: Camp Fire Alaska Location: Kenai Lake, Alaska Type: Civic
ECI/Hyer provided pro bono architectural services—concept design through construction administration services. Civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering services; project management; and construction labor were also provided pro bono. Materials were funded by private donation. This was truly a community project. The cabins were designed to have little impact on the surrounding terrain. They overlook the turquoise-colored lake below and surrounding wilderness, while complementing the existing structures. Situated on pilings, the undergrowth will quickly return to its natural state. Simple roof forms follow the slope of the terrain to keep the mass of the cabins as low as possible. Architectural detailing and the material palette are very simple, yet beautiful, and are respectful of the frontier traditions that are fundamental to Alaskan tradition.
